I rarely read with a highlighter in hand but I went frantically digging through my purse for one when I came across this line in his book: Marketing used to be about advertising, and advertising is expensive. Today, marketing is about engaging with the tribe and delivering products and services with stories that spread.
For the purpose of this post, you can substitute the word "audience" for "tribe" (Seth, hope this is OK with you!). There are 2 things you need to do with every marketing plan in these difficult economic times:
1. Calculate the potential ROI of any marketing efforts
2. Engage your audience.
I think 1 is fairly self-explanatory. If it's not, email me at maria@clarityinteractive.com and I'll break it down for you.
But, how does a company engage its audience? Have a conversation with them. Don't tell them what you sell or why they should buy it. Give them a venue for telling you what they need, and then talk to them, like you would your friend or neighbor, about how your product fills their need. Once they see your product as filling their need, and your company as a listener engaged in a friendly conversation with them, you'll never have to sell to them again.
